Extensive structural repairs to a beautiful gothic conservatory on an Oxfordshire castle.
Our client had experienced long term gutter leaks which upon inspection had caused decay in many of the main structural frame members and elevation joinery at low level. Much of the decay in the main frames was hidden behind the pilaster plinths and had therefore gone unnoticed. A thorough investigative and measured survey also revealed some significant settlement in the structure with the roof spreading and pushing the main frames out of plumb to the point that the structure was becoming unstable.
A complex system of temporary support and bracing was designed and engineered to slowly pull the structure back into alignment and allow systematic replacement of the main frame members. An additional structural roof tie bar was incorporated at the lower eaves level and extended within the rebuilt projection frame. This was an extremely involved process and the approach required considerable thought and care as all the work was completed with the roof glazing still in place.
